Basic Facts
The Islamic Republic of Pakistan is a country located in South Asia. It is bordered by Afghanistan and Iran to the west, India to the east, Arabian Sea and Gulf of Oman to the south, and China to the northeast. It lies adjacent to Tajikistan but it separated by Wakhan Corridor. Pakistan shares its marine border with Oman.

Islamabad is the capital of Pakistan, and the tenth largest city in the country. It is located on the Porthohar Plateau and was the first habitation of the Aryan community. With an estimated population of 1,330,000, it became the capital of Pakistan in 1960.



Pakistan is the 38th largest country in the world. It covers an area of 307,374 square miles and has an estimated population of 177,163,231. Pakistani rupee is the official currency of Pakistan and is issued by the State Bank of Pakistan. Its ISO 4217 code is PKR.Karachi is the largest city of Pakistan. It is a major seaport and the financial capital of the country. Located in the south of the country, it was the first capital of free Pakistan. It covers an area of 1,361.8 square miles and has an estimated population of 13,052,000.
Pakistan has a rich and unique culture that has preserved established traditions throughout history[citation needed]. Many cultural practices, foods, monuments, and shrines were inherited from the rule of Muslim Mughal and Afghan emperors including the national dress of Shalwar Qameez. Women wear brightly coloured shalwar qameez, while men often wear solid-coloured ones, usually with a sherwani or achkan (long coat) that is worn over the garment.

Pakistani society is largely multilingual and predominantly Muslim, with high regard for traditional family values, although urban families have grown into a nuclear family system due to the socio-economic constraints imposed by the traditional joint family system.

Pakistan''s official language is English and many people in big cities can speak it. Urdu is the national language and is spoken throughout Pakistan as lingua franca. In addition to Urdu most Pakistanis speak their regional languages or dialects such as Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto, Balochi, Saraiki, Shina, Burushaski, Khowar, Wakhi, Hindko etc.
English is the official language and is used in all government, educational and business entities, and is also understood and spoken at varying levels of competence by many people around Pakistan, especially by the upper classes and people who have gone through higher levels of education.
